Intro to art: the 5 art elements

Value is the “shade” of a color: Dark to light

Line is the rhythm and pattern of your stroke: variating, solid and implied.

Color is the hue, lightness and saturation as seen on a color wheel. Primary colors: Red, Yellow, Blue. Secondary colors: Green, Purple, Orange. To “gray” a color or get shades of brown use your color wheel knowledge. Here’s how:

Color Wheel Demo

In this demo, I’ve used cool and warm blues, yellows and reds. There are other color combinations you can use and I encourage you to explore how color combines in different ways. Then, when you want that perfect hue, you will have your color wheels and samples to give you some great ideas. You’ll know what works and what simply looks like a mucky mess.
