Paint

If you’re looking for a quick start, I recommend 12 color paint sets. These sets usually give you a good variety including a warm and cool of the three primary colors. I recommend Winsor & Newton.

Here are an excellent set of brushes to start off with and professional grade paint (pan or tube)…

Or save a bit and start out with student grade paint (pan or tube)...

If you'd like to order individual colors, I've carefully gone through and made sure the watercolor paint links below are both the brand and colors that I have on my palette. I've always used a warm and cool tone for all the primary colors. It makes it easier to push and pull the colors visually on your paintings so foregrounds will pop and backgrounds will recede.

I enjoy oxide of chromium as my green. It's a very down to earth green that I can quickly tint with yellow or blues, or gray-down with a red, to quickly get the color I need.

Permanent Rose is a vibrant color that is difficult to mix. I don't often use it but there are flamingos and flowers that it helps to push the reds to a more brilliant rose red tint and I've found it helpful to have on hand.

Brushes

For watercolor brushes, I personally prefer synthetic sable. If you want a thirstier, softer brush for your style then you'll want a squirrel brush instead of sable.

Below are all excellent, affordable brushes! Make sure you get what works best for you. There are no "right" answers...

Princeton Aqua Elite brushes (synthetic sable)

Winsor & Newton Sceptre brushes (blend of synthetic and natural sable);

Golden Natural Dagger Striper (blend of synthetic and natural sable);

Princeton Neptune brushes (synthetic squirrel) ** Princeton Neptune has more options and sets at Blick https://shrsl.com/46uie

Above are all affiliate links. I receive a small commission that helps me to create more art and grow.

Thank you for your support!

Why did I choose Blick as an affiliate? When I was taking art courses, they were the neighborhood store down the street. I'm pleased that I can recommend a quality art store. To me it's always been a place I trust. Their prices were always fair, their workers artists themselves, and they sell quality products (both student and professional grade).

**This is my personal experience and opinion. I am not a paid spokesman for the company to say any of the above.**
